This page is dedicated to the installation and configuration of "Adblock Plus" for ALL USERS on Ubuntu/LTSP systems.

Adblock Plus is a Firefox extension that blocks banner advertisements in web pages. This is of good use in an educational environment as it 'cleans up' web pages and gives the 'out of site, out of mind' concept to clicking on offers for free iPods, etc. to students.

Here's the quick-n-dirty on how to install AdBlock Plus in Firefox 3.x in Ubuntu:

  • Create the Adblock extension directory manually in the Firefox application directory:
sudo mkdir /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}
  • Change dirs, download and extract the latest Adblock XPI (the specific filename will change with versions so check for latest using URL below):
cd /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}

sudo wget --no-check-certificate

sudo unzip adblock_plus-
  • Now subscribe to a filter list (I recommend EasyList USA) by opening Firefox and following the instructions.
  • Exit Firefox and move the filter list to a global location (such as /home/share/firefox/adblockplus):
sudo mv /home/YourUserName/.mozilla/firefox/DefaultProfileName.default/adblockplus/patterns.ini  /home/share/firefox/adblockplus/
  • Edit adblockplus.js to configure for global use:
sudo vim /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}/defaults/preferences/adblockplus.js
extensions.adblockplus.showintoolbar (set to false)
extensions.adblockplus.showinstatusbar (set to false)
extensions.adblockplus.showsubscriptions (set to false)
extensions.adblockplus.patternsfile (set to /home/share/firefox/adblockplus/patterns.ini)
